Hereford Nav’ Scatter...

Paul Blanch navigated by Phil Jones entered Hereford Motor Club’s January Nav’ Scatter which was run in very icy conditions!!  Dropped from 3rd to 7th after incurring time penalties for finishing 4 minutes late!!   Paul later admitted that he knew the clock was 4 minutes slow but forgot to tell Phil!! .....more

The Carpetbagger...

Paul Tod returned to the driver’s seat for what must be the UK’s best road rally, The Carpetbagger, based in Dorset.

In his borrowed Peugeot 205 and dispite the terrible conditions, Paul was lying in the top 5 by the time they reached the first petrol halt.   But the 205 couldn’t put up with the worsening weather - or was it Paul’s driving - and the head gasket let go......

The 50th anniversary of arguably the best road rally ever, attracted many of the stars who competed in it’s ‘Motoring News’ heyday including our own Steve Davies and Nicky Grist who won in 1984. Thousands of fans had turned up to see this once in a lifetime occasion hoping for the chance to meet or chat with the likes of Ron Beecroft, Dereck Carless, Steve King, Neil Jones, Hywel Davies, Andrew Sleeman, Phil Mills and of course, Steve and Nick.

The ‘old’ navigators - or should we say the ones who competed in the’Motoring News’ days - were a bit worried about the format of modern road rallies but were well up for it.   For Steve and Nicky the night turned out to be a short one when an engine problem forced them to retire after the first section.    Wonder if they’ve caught the bug again - you never know, we may see them out again!!

Nick plots the route  for The Cilwendeg Rally
